Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov (search) said Thursday that Russia may send peacekeepers to Iraq as part of an international force, the Interfax news agency reported.

"It all depends on a specific resolution. I wouldn't not exclude it outright," Ivanov said during Russian military maneuvers in the southern Astrakhan region, Interfax quoted him as saying.

Ivanov's statement was the first signal that Russia may contribute peacekeepers for the U.S.-led coalition force in Iraq. Russia strongly had opposed the war and after it ended pushed for the United Nations (search) to take charge.
