Senator Joe Lieberman is serving his third term as Democratic Senator from Connecticut after running as a vice-presidential candidate alongside presidential candidate Al Gore.
In the U.S. Senate, Lieberman is chairman of the Government Affairs Committee. He is also a member of the Armed Services Committee, the Environment and Public Works Committee, the Small Business Committee and the Governmental Affairs Committee.
Lieberman's priorities include strengthening national security, expanding economic growth, improving education, protecting the environment, reforming government and strengthening communities.
He is a co-author of the Gulf War Resolution and co-sponsored the International Religious Freedom Act to promote the right to worship freely across the globe. He has worked for a balanced budget and fiscal discipline to help lower interest rates and keep the economy growing and supported cutting capital gains taxes to spur new investment for American industries.
He supports expanding educational options for parents by expanding funding for charter schools, increasing access to student loans and federal financial aid and creating education IRAs to help families save for college.
He co-sponsored the 1994 Crime Bill and won funding to increase the number of police in Connecticut; created Enterprise Zones to stimulate investment in American cities; supported welfare reform and added provisions to assist teenage mothers, discourage out-of-wedlock pregnancies and help states that move welfare recipients into self-supporting jobs; and continues to work for gun safety laws.
Lieberman was elected to the Connecticut state Senate in 1970 and served there for 10 years, including the last six as Majority Leader. From 1982 to 1988, he served as Connecticut's attorney general.
He is the author of five books: The Power Broker, a biography of the late Democratic Party chairman, John M. Bailey; The Scorpion and the Tarantula, a study of early efforts to control nuclear proliferation; The Legacy, a history of Connecticut politics from 1930-1980; Child Support in America, a guidebook on methods to increase the collection of child support from delinquent fathers, and In Praise of Public Life, a spirited defense of public life that draws on personal experience.
Lieberman was born in Stamford, Connecticut in 1942, and received his bachelor's degree from Yale College in 1964 and his law degree from Yale Law School in 1967.
Lieberman lives in New Haven with his wife Hadassah. They have four children.
