• Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld indicates he wants U.S. troops stationed near the Demilitarized Zone separating North and South Korea to be moved farther from the heavily defended zone, shifted to other countries in the region or brought home.

• A top provincial police official says seven Al Qaeda members were killed and eight wounded, including two sons of Usama bin Laden, in an operation in Afghanistan near the Pakistan border. U.S. counterterrorism officials disputes the claim that bin Laden's sons had been captured.
