In the early morning hours of August 13th, 1961, a monstrous affront to humanity was built, the Berlin Wall. For 28 years the wall was the stark symbol of the cold war, but its destruction became the defining moment of the presidency.
Join Host Tony Snow when we travel to Berlin, the capital of a now reunified German nation, to bring you the story behind one of the most famous speeches in American history.
When President Ronald Reagan traveled to Berlin on May 12th, 1987 his mission as a life long anti-Communist was clear. But on that day no one could imagine how quickly Reagan's challenge to Soviet President Gorbachev would be realized, or how soon the USSR and communism in Eastern Europe would collapse.
Before it was delivered, Reagan's Berlin Wall speech was seen as controversial. There were officials in the White House who called it excessive, inflammatory, and unpresidential, but as you'll learn in this special hour-long broadcast, this speech was pure Ronald Reagan.
In Tear Down This Wall key officials and members of Reagan's staff bring you a rare look at the writing of this historic speech. You'll meet a group of Berliners who tell how the wall affected their lives and about the unusual role they played in helping Reagan prepare the speech.
Sergei Krushchev, the son of America's cold war nemesis, Soviet Premier, Nikita Krushchev will tell you why his father built the wall and about the close calls of extraordinary danger civilization faced in the nuclear age. And you'll see and hear the reaction to the speech more than 15 years from Mr. Gorbachev himself.
We begin our story at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California where a large section of the Wall stands as a tribute to a president and his ideals.
Please join us for a very special look at President Reagan and a speech that changed the world. Tear Down This Wall airs only on the Fox News Channel on Saturday June 8 at 11 p.m. ET.
