And now the most compelling two minutes in television, the latest from the wartime grapevine:
Albright Diagnoses the Administration
Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright says the Bush administration's foreign policy suffers from what she calls "untreated bipolar disorder." In a graduation speech at Tufts University in Massachusetts, Albright said, "They talk about the importance of the rule of law, but seem allergic to treaties designed to strengthen the rule of law in areas such as money-laundering, biological weapons, crimes against humanity, and the environment." She said there is also a "split personality" on Afghanistan where "one day they are ridiculing nation-building and the next proposing a new Marshall plan."
It's Not Over Til It's Over?
While the administration is warning of new terrorist attacks, including possible suicide bombings in this country, Green Party activist Ralph Nader has discovered a new kind of threat — fast food. His comments came on a trip to Paris where he lamented the spread of fast-food restaurants. “The replacement," he told Frenchmen, "of your traditional kitchen by foods standardized by multinational companies with high content in fats and sugars is more than an insult in your cultures, it is a weapon of massive destruction."
No Ratings Flip-Flop After the Flap
A new poll out today suggests the president's standing has not been hurt by the flap over that pre-9/11 briefing that told him of possible terrorist hijackings. Fifty-eight percent of those surveyed by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal said they were satisfied with the measures the administration took prior to 9/11 and 54 percent said they thought the administration had been open and candid on the issue. As for a so-called full-scale investigation, 58 percent said they thought it would be unproductive and too political. The poll was taken on Saturday.
Leaning Towards the Opposition
Israeli security sources are saying that while Saudi Arabia is pressing Yasser Arafat and the terrorist group Hamas to cool it on the suicide murders, Syria is doing just the opposite. The leading Israeli newspaper Haaretz said Syria is leaning on both Hamas and the Islamic Jihad to renew the bombings, and the paper said the appeals came from Syrian President Bashar Assad himself. The newspaper said Assad has offered Hamas money to resume the bombings and it said Islamic Jihad has agreed to do so.
