MIAMI – O.J. Simpson should be reimbursed $137 of $6,206 in legal bills he submitted after he was acquitted on road-rage charges, a judge recommended Thursday.
Prosecutor Jeremy Leathe had fought any payment by Miami-Dade County, saying he has not seen any receipts from the former football star. But Circuit Judge Dennis Murphy certified the $137 payment for witness fees.
State law allows acquitted defendants to recover court-related expenses, such as subpoenas and processing fees. Simpson attorney Yale Galanter threw in the cost of depositions and investigators, citing a dissenting opinion in a 1998 state Supreme Court case.
Any payments are subject to approval by the county commission.
Simpson, 54, was cleared of burglary and battery charges in October in a dispute with another motorist.
