Tell me if this has ever happened to you.
You're in your car and traffic is merging. Only the guy next to you isn't giving way — not an inch. He'd sooner ram into you than let you get in front of him.
Now, you're a calm, rational person. But this guy isn't. You have a nice, new car. This guy's got a '72 Plymouth Duster with smoke coming out of it.
So you figure he's a jerk and let him go.
That's what I think it's like dealing with the Taliban. They're like that jerk in the Duster — only they don't even have that!
We've bombed the hell out of these guys and they're still saying, "not an inch."
Now, that either makes them very brave, or very crazy. I don't think it matters. It makes our job very difficult.
How do you reason with whack-jobs? And people who often don't even value their own lives? It's hard to fight a nut. Nuts don't respond to reason. Then again, nuts don't hijack planes and ram them into buildings.
They're like crazy bosses who don't see the obvious. Your company's hurting, your people are hurting. And there's a takeover offer that could at least save some of you from hurting much more.
But no, the crazy boss ignores all overtures. All offers. All sense.
The Taliban is run by a bunch of crazy bosses. Ignoring all warnings. All attacks. All reason. They're nuts.
We're in this for the long haul because the president knows what's going on.
And they're in this for the long haul, because they don't.
The difference between these nuts and the one in the Duster is this: we're cutting in — now.
