Talking Points: Some No Spin on Condit-Levy

Some no spin about the Condit/Levy case. 

That's the subject of this evening's Talking Points memo.  Each night when I say my prayers, one of them is, please God, make this story go away.  I know I'm cutting my throat ratings-wise, but I intend to wind this summer soap opera up.

There is really only one issue outstanding now and that is the whereabouts of Ms. Levy.  Our one report this evening has to do with that.  If you want all Chandra all the time, better find that remote.

I was watching the competition the last few days and these panels are unbelievable.  Endless speculation, endless repetition, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. blah.  Yet there are about two million Americans that can't get enough of that, and continue to watch.  Of course, that's their perfect right.

Now, the ethics of the story continue to interest me.  Condit's lawyer, Abbe Lowell, is always walking an ethical line, as he did on "Meet the Press," when he defended Condit lying about his affairs.

ABBE LOWELL, CONDIT ATTORNEY:  ...the congressman lied about it.  One of the things he's criticized for and it could be a proper criticism, you know, when this woman named Joleen or Anne Marie Smith say that they had a relationship or they a certain kind of relationship, I guess I understand they're defining it the way they're defining it.  I realize it drives people insane if the congressman says, "I didn't deem that to be a relationship.  Whatever we shared together, whatever we were, I don't think that's a relationship."

O'REILLY:  Of course, that's ridiculous.  And the same kind of stuff that Lowell threw out while defending President Clinton.  It's the same racket.  It's a joke, but Lowell is still making more than $400 an hour with his routine.  As for the flight attendant, Anne Marie Smith, we know her story.  I personally believe it.  And her reaction to Lowell is noteworthy.

ANNE MARIE SMITH, FLIGHT ATTENDANT:  When somebody calls you every day, two or three times a day, you see each other frequently, you exchange gifts, you know, you express, you know, concern or I mean, that's a relationship.  And it was -- I don't really  like to discuss this, but it was an intimate relationship.

O'REILLY:  All right, so who cares, right?  Some Americans are still hung up about the sex angle of this story, buying into Condit's refusal to address the issue.

But look, if Chandra Levy was emotionally upset with Condit or if she confided something to him, that is an important part of any investigation and surely the Levy family should have that information.  That's what's important about the sex angle.

If he's going to lie about other stuff, he could certainly be lying about that.  The end zone on the story is that unless something breaks, it has hit a wall, the country knows the character of Gary Condit now.  But what we don't know is what happened to Chandra and if Condit had anything to do with it.

So the mystery is still intact.  We'll keep you posted, but we're bailing on the repetition.  And that's the memo.

Most Ridiculous Item of the Day

Time now for the "Most Ridiculous Item of the Day."  Bill Clinton is down in Brazil to give a speech and was spotted in Rio buying some souvenirs.  Well, maybe souvenirs is the wrong word.  The former president went into the Blue Man Beachwear Boutique and bought two bikinis for more than $100.  They were very small bikinis.  Would it be ridiculous to ask who they were for?  Probably.
