Warriors GM says Steph Curry's lack of ego helped lure Kevin Durant

The Golden State Warriors are a little more than a month from their regular-season opener against the Spurs, unveiling the NBA's latest super team.

The Warriors will head into the season as a clear-cut favorite to hoist the Larry O'Brien Trophy in June, mostly due to signing Kevin Durant this summer. Adding the four-time scoring champ while also retaining its star core -- Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green -- was a major coup for a team that is coming off a record-setting 73-win season.

So how did the Warriors pull off landing the most sought-after free agent last summer? According to Golden State general manager Bob Myers, Curry's selflessness was a key reason.

"If you know Steph, he doesn't have an ego," Myers said on the "Jim Rome Show." "He looked in Kevin's eyes and said, 'I want you on this team', and he sent a brilliant text to Kevin that said, 'If you win MVP or I win MVP, it doesn't matter; we're trying to win championships. And if you do win, I'll be in the front row clapping for you at the press conference.'"

Curry, the NBA's reigning two-time MVP, might not win the league's most prestigious individual award for a third consecutive season now that he has to share the offensive load with Durant. But Durant's pursuit of his first championship is still his main goal, something that, according to Myers, attracted the former Thunder star to Golden State.

"Steph Curry resonates with a guy like Kevin Durant that says it's not about anything other than winning, and that's what our players said, and I think (Durant) heard it, and it meant something to him," Myers said.
