The Detroit Tigers placed catcher Alex Avila on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday.

Avila, who has a strained right hamstring, is batting .250 with five homers and 20 RBI in 44 games this season.

In a corresponding roster move, the Tigers purchased the contract of catcher Bryan Holaday from Triple-A Toledo and designated backstop Omir Santos for assignment.

Santos was called up from Toledo on May 30 and went 1-for-8 in three games.

Holaday, 24, has hit .248 with 10 RBI and no home runs in 36 games for the Mud Hens this season.

Also on Wednesday, Detroit recalled right-handed pitcher Jose Ortega from Toledo.
