Mets' Harvey to undergo Tommy John surgery

Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - New York Mets' ace Matt Harvey has elected to undergo surgery to repair a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

Harvey, 24, was one of the best young pitchers in baseball prior to going on the disabled list on Aug. 26 with forearm soreness following a start against the Detroit Tigers.

The right-hander started the All-Star game in his first full season in the majors. He started 26 games, posting a 9-5 record with a 2.27 ERA and 191 strikeouts. Harvey also finished second in the majors with a 0.93 WHIP.

Harvey opted to try rest and rehab prior to surgery, but eventually settled on the latter, which will be performed by Dr. James Andrews later this month. The young right-hander is expected to miss the duration of the 2014 season, but should be able to return to the team for the start of 2015.
