Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

Connecticut has signed women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma to a new five-year, $10.86 million contract designed to keep him at the school through the 2017-18 season.

The 59-year-old Hall of Famer, who has coached at UConn for the past 28 seasons, will make $1.95 million in salary, speaking fees and media fees in the next year. That will gradually increase to $2.4 million in the final year of the contract.

He also can earn bonuses for winning conference championships, advancing in the NCAA tournament and winning another national title. Auriemma has led the Huskies to seven national championships and 13 Final Fours.

The contract takes effect on April 15, after this year's tournament.

The Huskies (31-4) play Maryland in Saturday's Bridgeport Region semifinal.
