Mets captain David Wright to have neck surgery that could end his season

New York Mets third baseman David Wright will have neck surgery today.

Wright, 33, has been sidelined since May 28 because of a herniated disc.

It is unclear whether Wright will be able to return this season, but there is a strong possibility that his season is over.

"After trying every way to get back on the field, I've come to realize that it's best for me, my teammates and the organization to proceed with surgery at this time," Wright said in a statement, per the New York Daily News.

"My neck simply did not respond to any of the treatments of the past few weeks. While incredibly frustrating and disappointing, I am determined to make a full recovery and get back on the field as soon as I can to help the Mets win. I greatly appreciate the support of my teammates and our fans throughout the last few weeks."

In 37 games this season, he is hitting .226/.350/.438 with seven homers and 14 RBI. Last season, Wright was limited to just 38 games because of spinal stenosis, but he returned in September and helped lead the Mets to the NL pennant.

With Wright sidelined indefinitely, the Mets could be in the market for a third baseman prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. Their internal options include Kelly Johnson, Wilmer Flores and Neil Walker, who could shift from second base to the hot corner.
