Today, Bud Moore is 91 years old, having just celebrated his birthday last month.

But on this day 72 years ago, Moore was a 19-year-old kid from South Carolina who found himself smack in the middle of D-Day, the greatest military invasion of all time.

Moore was a member of the Fourth Infantry Division that went on shore at Utah Beach on the French coast near Normandy in the Cotentin Peninsula. During World War II, Moore was awarded two Bronze Stars and five Purple Hearts.

Once he got back home to Spartanburg, Moore became a mechanic and then began a racing career that over 37 years earned him 63 NASCAR Premier Series race victories, 43 poles, two championships and place in the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

In the video, Moore talks about preparing for D-Day. It's well worth a listen.
