Clash of the Titans kicks off at Dover's Monster Mile

Today kicks off a Clash of the Titans at the Monster Mile.

In one corner, the four-car Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota armada, which has won the last five non-restrictor-plate NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races this season and six of the first 11 races overall.

In the other corner, it's six-time Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson who is the defending winner of the AAA 400 Drive For Autism at Dover International Speedway, a track where Johnson has 10 victories and has led 2,999 laps.

Today should give us the first glimpse of where these powerhouses stand relative to one another and whether someone else -- maybe Kevin Harvick, Brad Keselowski or Dale Earnhardt Jr. -- can crash the JGR/JJ party.

All three series are in action today at Dover, with television coverage on FS1. The Cup teams practice at 11 a.m. ET, with qualifying at 3:45 p.m.

Some news and notes for this weekend:

Kyle Busch will be without his crew chief, Adam Stevens and front-tire changer Josh Leslie this weekend. Both were suspended for one-race because of lug nut violations last weekend at Kansas Speedway.

If Busch wins on Sunday, he will break the record for most victories with JGR. He and Tony Stewart are tied with 33 wins each with the team.

Harvick should be strong again this weekend. He was second here a year ago in this race and then won the fall Dover race.

As good a racer as Joey Logano is, he's only led one lap in 14 Dover starts.

Matt Kenseth made his first Cup start here in 1998, when he subbed for Bill Elliott, who was attending his father's funeral. Kenseth was an impressive sixth in that race.

Rain could be a factor today -- practice should be OK, but the National Weather Service is calling for scattered showers in the afternoon. If qualifying is rained out, the grid will be set by practice speeds, so you could see some teams push harder than usual in practice.
