WOLFSBURG, Germany --

Wolfsburg says it has terminated the contract of Nicklas Bendtner, releasing the Denmark striker one season early.

Bendtner arrived in Wolfsburg in 2014 but failed to settle in. He fell out with Wolfsburg's management several times over off-the-field issues and had been told not to come to training at the end of March.

Bendtner scored three goals in 31 Bundesliga appearances. He still had another season on his contract.

Wolfsburg reached the quarterfinals of the Champions League but was eliminated by Real Madrid. The slumping team is 10th in the Bundesliga with three matches left and looks set to miss out on a place in the Europa League next season.
