BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) Francisco Cervelli is eager to show his breakout 2015 season was no fluke.

The Pirates catcher hit .295 while playing 128 games in his first year in Pittsburgh, helping the Pirates earn a third straight playoff berth. Cervelli says he took a month off after the season was over to recover but joked he was still in pain when he resumed training.

Manager Clint Hurdle praised Cervelli's ability to quickly develop chemistry with a pitching staff that won 98 games. Cervelli is entering the final year of his contract and will become a free agent in the fall. Cervelli says he's not focused on anything past this season.

The Pirates open Grapefruit League play on Tuesday against Detroit.
