Ex-NFL agent: RG3 "a pawn" in Redskins' contract talks with Cousins

Robert Griffin III is being used as insurance by the Washington Redskins as they attempt to hash out a new contract with starting quarterback Kirk Cousins.

So says former NFL agent Joel Corry, who contends that the Redskins are keeping Griffin on the roster to provide the specter of a backup plan at quarterback should negotiations with Cousins remain at a standstill.

"He's kind of a pawn in this whole Kirk Cousins game," Corry said of Griffin. "The agent's not going to buy it. The agent's probably trying hard not to laugh."

The Redskins are expected to release Griffin by March 9, the date when his $16.1 million salary for the 2016 season becomes guaranteed. The former No. 2 overall draft pick did not take one snap this season.

Corry said any hope of Washington hoping to work out a trade for Griffin is implausible, primarily because of his hefty salary and also because potential suitors are expecting him to be released.

"He wants to be free to pick his own situation," said Corry, who was an agent for 16 years. "Why would you give up a pick for [Griffin} when you can get him for free?"
