The St. Louis Cardinals have added depth to their bench, and parted ways with an established veteran in the process.

St. Louis shipped outfielder Jon Jay to the San Diego Padres on Tuesday in exchange for utility infielder Jedd Gyorko in a deal that was first reported by FOX Sports baseball insider Jon Morosi.

Gyorko hit .247 with 16 homers and 57 RBIs last season with the Friars. The 27-year-old right-hander is under club control until 2020, with the final year of the deal set as a $13 million option.

Jay heads to the West Coast after an injury plagued 2015 that ultimately resulted in Randal Grichuk passing him in playing time. Jay is due to become a free agent after next season.
