Matt Carpenter's feast-or-famine season at the plate continues. Recently on a tear of hitting home runs, the St. Louis Cardinals third baseman has taken to striking out. A lot.
Carpenter went down three more times Sunday against San Diego to make it 10 strikeouts in his last 20 at-bats, none of which have even resulted in a single base hit.
Just prior, Carpenter was on a hot streak with a stretch of seven home runs in 10 games.
During Saturday's game, Carpenter's frustration bubbled over. He was ejected for arguing a called third strike. He now owns a club-high 103 strikeouts on the season.
"He's a perfectionist. We see him real hot and then we see times where -- I even explained to him today [Sunday] -- a couple of calls kind of get him out of his zone," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "He knows the strike zone as well as anybody in baseball and when one doesn't go his way I think it's something that wears on him pretty hard and sometimes he has trouble letting it go through the next at-bat."
