The Chicago Cubs are concentrating on the here-and-now, but after the weekend's four-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants, it was impossible not to notice what the Cubs could have cooking in a few years.
Rookies Kris Bryant, Addison Russell, Kyle Schwarber and Jorge Soler played significant roles in the sweep that vaulted Chicago 3.5 games ahead of the defending champs in the race for the second wild-card spot.
Courtesy of the Chicago Sun-Times, this was the offensive production of the four youngsters:
Bryant: .364/.533/.727, 2B, HR, 4 RBI
Russell: .357/.333/.500, 2 2B, 2 RBI
Schwarber: .333/.444/.600, 2B, HR, 6 RBI
Soler: .462/.533/.538, 2B, 4 RBI
That's some production for any foursome regardless of service time.
Soler, according to the Sun-Times, has hit safely in nine consecutive games, and his batting .370 with eight RBI in August after batting 100 points worse and with only nine total RBI in all of July.
Bryant's RBI in Sunday's win gave him 65, the most among rookies.
When examining how the Cubs have gone 8-1 in August, it'd be a huge mistake not to put the young guns high on the list.
