Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Phillies recalled Cody Asche from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday.

To clear room for Asche on the 25-man roster, the Phillies designated former All-Star and Gold Glove-winning outfielder Grady Sizemore for assignment.

Asche had been the Phillies' everyday third baseman before he was optioned to the minors earlier this month. The move enabled the team to promote third-base prospect Maikel Franco, who was tearing up the minors.

Believing Asche is still a key part of the club's future, the Phillies had him learn to play left field while with Lehigh Valley.

The 24-year-old Asche was batting .245 with two home runs and four RBI in 30 games this season prior to being demoted.

Sizemore, 32, hit .245 with five doubles and six RBI in 39 games.
