Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Mets designated Kirk Nieuwenhuis for assignment Tuesday, with the team purchasing the contract of fellow outfielder Darrell Ceciliani from Triple-A Las Vegas to fill the roster spot.

Nieuwenhuis went just 3-of-38 at the plate this season. The 27-year-old has spent parts of each of the last four seasons with the Mets, with his best performance coming when he batted .252 with seven home runs and 28 RBI in 91 games as a rookie in 2012.

Ceciliani, 24, earned the promotion by batting .336 with five homers, 17 RBI and six stolen bases in 37 games with Las Vegas. The 2009 fourth-round draft pick currently ranks fifth in the Pacific Coast League in hitting and seventh in slugging percentage (.584).
