(SportsNetwork.com) - Miguel Cabrera eyes a couple of milestones on Saturday when the Detroit Tigers continue a three-game set with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Cabrera not only comes into this afternoon's tilt a homer shy of 400, but his next home run will move him past Andres Galarraga for the most ever by a Venezuelan-born player.
"He's one of the best, there's nothing else you can say about Galarraga," Cabrera said. "He was a big-time hitter."
Cabrera homered and had three hits on Friday to help the Tigers power past St. Louis, 10-4. Yoenis Cespedes went 3-for-5 with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored and J.D. Martinez also homered for the Tigers, who have won two straight games.
"The last couple of days we've swung the bat better," Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said. "I hope we stay right there offensively as a club."
Starter Shane Greene (4-2) earned the win after allowing just five hits and two walks with four strikeouts over five scoreless innings.
Jhonny Peralta and Jason Heyward each hit two-run homers for the Cardinals, who had starter Carlos Martinez (3-2) give up two runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts over five-plus frames.
"It was just one of those days," St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said. "They make you pay when you make mistakes."
Heading to the hill for the Tigers on Saturday will be left-hander David Price, who has been battling a hamstring issue and is 3-1 with a 3.30 ERA. Price did not get a decision last Friday against Kansas City, but was not sharp, as he surrendered a season-high 13 hits and five runs (4 earned) in 6 1/3 innings of his team's 6-5 win.
St. Louis, meanwhile, turns to lefty Tyler Lyons, who has yet to record a decision this season, but is pitching to a 4.82 ERA. Lyons allowed three runs (2 earned) and five hits in five innings on Sunday to the Pittsburgh Pirates in a 4-3 loss.
Lyons will have the unenviable task of slowing down Cabrera, who is 6-for-10 over his last two games with three homers. Not to mention, he is hitting .471 with eight homers during day games this season.
"I know it's going to be big in Venezuela," Cabrera recently said of going past Galarraga. "Everybody is going to feel proud of that. There's going to be a lot of excitement over there. But I have to stay focused on what I can do right here."
The Tigers are 20-10 versus the Cardinals all-time, but did lose in five games to St. Louis in the 2006 World Series.
