Padres withstand rain delay before dispatching Nats

San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Derek Norris homered, tripled and knocked in five runs as the San Diego Padres downed the Washington Nationals, 8-3, in the opener of a four-game set at soggy Petco Park.

Cory Spangenberg had a pair of homers for the Padres, who have won two straight.

Tyson Ross (2-3) got the win after going five-plus innings and allowing two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out six. Ross struck out Denard Span for the first out of the game, then the rains came and delayed the contest for nearly two hours.

Doug Fister (2-2) was charged with seven runs in two innings for Washington.

Out of the break, Ross returned to the hill, quickly got the final two outs of the first, and let his offense go to work.

The Padres didn't look like they minded the delay as Matt Kemp and Justin Upton both reached on two-out singles preceding Norris' blast to left field that made it 3-0.

San Diego came through with some more two-out hitting in the second.

Spangenberg launched his first homer of the season for a 4-0 lead, then a walk to Will Venable and another single from Kemp set up Upton's RBI knock. Norris followed with a triple to deep left center that extended the margin to 7-0.

Bryce Harper walked with two outs in the fourth and scored two batters later on Wilson Ramos' single through the right side.

Spangenberg got the run back in the home fourth with an opposite-field homer off Blake Treinen.

Washington added a run in the fifth on Yunel Escobar's run-scoring groundout to cut its deficit to 8-2.

Ross' interesting night came to a close after consecutive walks to begin the sixth, then Dale Thayer came on and retired the next three batters to get out of the jam.

Ramos sent a sacrifice fly to right in the top of the eighth to account for the final margin.

Game Notes

The rain delay was the sixth in Petco Park's history, spanning 337 games between delays ... Ramos extended his hitting streak to 16 games ... Spangenberg had two home runs in his career entering the game.
