Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Boston Red Sox fired pitching coach Juan Nieves on Thursday.

Nieves takes the fall for a pitching staff that has an American League-worst 4.86 ERA through 28 games. Red Sox hurlers have allowed opposing teams to hit .263.

Boston is off to just a 13-15 start this season.

Nieves was in his third season as pitching coach for the Red Sox.

In 2014, Boston's relievers posted a 3.33 ERA, the lowest mark for the club since 2007 (3.10). In 2013, the Sox pitching staff posted a 3.79 ERA, the lowest mark for the club since 2002 (3.75 ERA).
