Uniondale, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - One day after his club was eliminated in a Game 7, New York Islanders defenseman Travis Hamonic finally revealed the source of the injury which kept him sidelined for the entire series.
Hamonic said he suffered a torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee during an April 10 game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The damage was such that surgery was not required.
Although the timetable for return to the ice was in the 6-to-8 week range, Hamonic also related that his rehab was ahead of schedule and he could have returned toward the end of the next round if the Islanders had beaten Washington.
Isles coach Jack Capuano had been guarded when discussing his defenseman's condition, only saying that Hamonic suffered an undisclosed injury for which there's no immediate timetable for recovery.
The 24-year-old Manitoba native completed his fifth NHL season by tying a career high with five goals and setting new personal bests of 28 assists and 33 points over 71 contests.
Hamonic's replacement, Calvin de Haan, sustained a sprained AC joint in his left shoulder during Game 5, and is listed as week-to-week while recovering.
