San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Houston Astros announced on Tuesday that shortstop Jed Lowrie will be out until after the All-Star break after suffering a torn ligament in his right thumb.

Lowrie, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list, will have to undergo surgery to correct the problem.

The 31-year-old veteran infielder has hit .300 with four home runs, four doubles and 10 RBI in 18 games during the first season of his second tenure with the club. Lowrie was limited to 97 games three years back with Houston.

To fill the roster spot, the Astros recalled infielder Jonathan Villar from Triple-A Fresno.

Villar hit just .077 in a seven-game call-up from Apr. 9-20.
