Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Daniel Murphy drove in the winning run in the eighth as the New York Mets avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of the Atlanta Braves with a 4-3 win on Sunday.
Michael Cuddyer hit a two-run home run for the Mets, who had dropped the first two games of the set by identical 5-3 decisions. Bartolo Colon (2-0) gave up three runs on six hits while striking out one and driving in a run over seven innings.
"It was really important that we salvaged the series and we were able to do that today so it was nice," said Cuddyer.
Jonny Gomes hit a solo homer and Andrelton Simmons added a two-run triple for the Braves, who suffered their first loss of the young season.
Alex Wood went 6 2/3 innings and gave up three runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out seven, while Juan Jaime (0-1) was handed the loss.
"We had a chance to win the game today because Wood had a really strong outing," said Atlanta catcher A.J. Pierzynski. "We got some big hits when we needed them, but it just wasn't enough today."
With the score tied in the eighth, the Mets loaded the bases with one out and pushed the go-ahead run across on a Murphy sacrifice fly for a 4-3 lead.
Carlos Torres and Jerry Blevins worked a scoreless eighth inning, with Blevins recording the first out of the ninth before Jeurys Familia recorded the final two outs for his first save of the season.
The Mets went on top in the first as Lucas Duda kept the inning alive with a two-out single, and Cuddyer followed with his first homer of the year for a 2-0 lead.
Atlanta tied the game in the second when Simmons sliced a pitch to left-center that fell for a triple and scored Gomes and Alberto Callaspo.
New York went back on top in the fourth as Wilmer Flores led off with a double, moved to third on a Ruben Tejada groundout, and came home when Colon singled to right for a 3-2 lead.
The Braves, though, tied the game once again when Gomes homered with one out in the seventh, his first of the season.
The Mets have their home opener on Monday when they host the Phillies to begin a three-game set ... Atlanta hosts Miami for three games beginning on Monday ... Colon improved to 4-0 in his career at Turner Field.
