Foxborough, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The New England Revolution will take aim at their first win of the season on Saturday when the club welcomes the San Jose Earthquakes to Gillette Stadium.
After reaching MLS Cup final last season, the Revs have gotten off to a slow start, finding themselves winless and goalless through the first three matches of the 2015 season.
The club opened the season with a 3-0 rout at the hands of Seattle Sounders FC and followed it up with a 2-0 loss to New York City FC. Last week, the club again failed to find the back of the net, but took a point in a scoreless draw against the Montreal Impact.
New England played with an extra man from the 61st minute when Impact defender Hassoun Camara was sent off, but the Revs still could not score. The club's scoreless streak, dating back to last season, has reached 325 minutes.
The longest a team has gone without scoring from the start of the season is 383 minutes, an honor that belongs to the 2007 Toronto FC side.
"It was actually really good, knowing that we were (playing our) home opener, we were all excited," said Revolution midfielder Diego Fagundez. "We know the fans were excited. It was just tough to leave with a tie, not what we wanted."
"We don't want to become complacent. It's not fun to not score goals and not win games," said defender Andrew Farrell. "But I think we know that we can. I think with the capable players here to make that happen it's just going to. I think once we get that first one I think all of the next are going to come. You've got to stay positive. It's good to get a shutout at home and build off the last two disappointing results but you've got to keep moving forward. You can't lull on the past and I think we're going to look good -- we're going to be good."
For San Jose, the 'Quakes will be hoping for a second consecutive victory after opening their brand-new Avaya Stadium last week with a 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire.
After earning a stunning 3-2 win over Seattle with 10 men, San Jose returned home hoping to open its new stadium in style and the club did just that.
The hosts opened the scoring after just five minutes when Matias Perez Garcia served a tantalizing corner kick into the penalty area. Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson came off his line to claim the ball but couldn't get there which allowed rookie Fatai Alashe to knock home the loose ball.
The 'Quakes doubled the lead in the 21st minute when Perez Garcia sent a free kick into the box that was directed on goal by Clarence Goodson with a powerful volley. Johnson made the save but spilled rebound and Ty Harden poked it home for his first goal in MLS.
The Fire pulled one back just prior to the half-hour mark when Joevin Jones slid one across the pitch to a wide-open Harry Shipp, who took his time and calmly slotted it past San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham for the club's first goal of the season.
New England has won each of the past two meetings between the teams, a 2-0 decision on June 6 2013, and a 2-1 win on March 29, 2014.
