Santo Antonio da Serra, Madeira (SportsNetwork.com) - Inclement weather over several days forced officials to cancel the Madeira Islands Open over the weekend, and now the tournament has been rescheduled.

The event at Santo da Serra Golf Club will now be contested July 30-August2.

Strong wind on Thursday didn't allow a single shot to be struck. The first round finally got underway on Friday after another wind delay. After more delays on Saturday, the first round was finally completed.

The event had been short to 54 holes, then to 36. The final round never started on Sunday due to fog and rain, which forced officials to cancel the event.

This marked the second straight year weather affected the tournament.

"Given the importance of the Madeira Islands Open and our close working relationship with the golf club and sponsors, we were very keen to reschedule the tournament and the fact that we have managed to do so this quickly is testament to the desire and commitment of all parties to reach an agreement," said Keith Waters, Chief Operating Officer of The European Tour.

"So we should thank the representatives of Santo da Serra, BPI, Governo Regional da Madeira and Turismo de Portugal for all their hard work and efforts in difficult circumstances last week, and we look forward to working together with them in July, when we hope the weather gods will be smiling upon us."

The tournament will be contested opposite of the inaugural Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Match Play.
