Rodgers downs Marino in Colombia

Bogota, Colombia (SportsNetwork.com) - Patrick Rodgers birdied the second playoff hole on Sunday to defeat Steve Marino and win the Pacific Rubiales Colombia Championship.

Rodgers closed with a 6-under 65 to end at 17-under-par 267. Steve Marino, who led after the third round was completed earlier Sunday, finished with a 2- under 69 to join Rodgers at minus-17.

The duo played the par-3 12th first and both made par. At the par-4 ninth, Rodgers converted an 8-foot birdie effort to defeat Marino.

"This is huge. I've already had so many ups and downs in my pro career. To be out here and win so early is a dream come true. I'm really excited for the rest of the season," Rodgers said.

Andrew Yun also closed with a 65 on the Fundadores Course at Bogota Country Club to move into a tie for third. He was joined at minus-15 by Chase Wright, who shot 69 in the final round.

Tyler McCumber grabbed fifth at 13-under-par 271 after closing with a 69 of his own. Greg Eason (65) and Roberto Diaz (68) shared sixth at minus-12.

Marino opened the final round with a birdie at the first to move to 16-under. He fell back with bogeys at four and seven.

Rodgers, who was two groups ahead of Marino, birdied three of four holes from the third to move to 14-under. Rodgers tripped to a bogey at the seventh, but came right back with a birdie at No. 8.

Around the turn, Rodgers birdied the 10th to get to 15-under. Marino joined him there with a birdie at the ninth. Marino made it two in a row as he also birdied the 10th.

There was a 1-hour, 22-minute weather delay when the leaders were on the back nine. When play resumed, Rodgers quickly birdied No. 16 to tie Marino at minus-16. Rodgers also birdied the par-5 closing hole despite finding a hazard off the tee.

"I must have been amped up because that shot doesn't normally go that far," Rodgers stated. "I had a really awkward stance in there and had to get the ball up quickly and still keep it under the trees."

Marino, who parred seven in a row from the 11th, birdied the last to force the playoff.
