Boyle scores 2 as Lightning top Ducks

Tampa, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - The Tampa Bay Lightning scored three first- period goals and held on to beat the Anaheim Ducks 5-3 on Sunday.

Brian Boyle scored twice to lead Tampa Bay to its 11th win in its last 12 home games. Valtteri Filppula had a goal and two assists, Ryan Callahan had a goal and an assist, and Steven Stamkos tallied two assists. Nikita Kucherov scored his 20th goal as well.

Ben Bishop made 25 saves on 28 shots to rebound from Saturday's loss to the Los Angeles Kings.

"He doesn't make it into the second period last night. For him to come up as big as he did today for us, it says a lot about the kid," said Lightning coach Jon Cooper.

Frederik Andersen allowed all five Lightning goals on 22 shots, and he was forced to leave the game in the third period when the net tipped over on him. The Ducks fell to 1-1-1 on their ongoing five-game road trip.

Ryan Getzlaf was credited with his 200th NHL goal, and Sami Vatanen and Eric Brewer also scored for Anaheim.

It did not even take three minutes for Tampa Bay to take the lead. After Victor Hedman weaved through several Ducks, his backhand pass from behind the goal line found Boyle in front, ready to chip the puck into the net.

The Lightning failed to convert on power play chances in the first period, but they added to their lead at full strength. Brewer whiffed clearing a puck out of the slot, and Filppula made him pay for the mistake by burying it.

There was only 1:08 remaining in the opening period when Kucherov put Tampa Bay up three. On the rush,.Tyler Johnson hit Kucherov with a tape-to- tape pass, and he redirected the puck past Andersen.

"We just have to forget about this one and move on," said Ducks forward Nate Thompson. "We still have two more games left on this road trip. We just need to keep going from here."

Nearly five minutes expired in the second period before the Ducks got on the board. Getzlaf was credited with the goal, but the puck went in the net off Boyle's skate.

Boyle atoned for his mistake 10 minutes later. Ondrej Palat's initial shot was stopped by Andersen, but he failed to cover the puck cleanly. Boyle lifted the puck through the scramble in front to put the Lightning back up three.

In the third period, the Lightning's top line put the game away. Andersen stopped a Stamkos shot on the rush, but the rebound went right to Callahan who deposited the puck in the net to extend their lead to 5-1.

Tampa Bay aided the Ducks on their second goal with five minutes to play in the game. Vatanen's centering pass to Corey Perry was knocked into the net by Mark Barberio sliding on the ice to block the pass.

Brewer beat his former team for his first goal of the season with 2 1/2 minutes to play. He slapped a rolling puck through traffic to pull within two, but Anaheim did not get closer.

Game Notes

This was Brewer's first game against the Lightning since the November trade that sent him from Tampa Bay to Anaheim ... Getzlaf missed the previous two games with a lower-body injury ... Kucherov has scored in three straight games ... Tampa Bay improved to 23-4-4 when scoring the first goal and 22-0-2 when leading after two periods.
