London, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Harry Kane netted a second-half brace on Saturday to lift Tottenham-Hotspur to a 2-1 victory over Arsenal at White Hart Lane in the latest installment of the north London derby.
Both sides entered the match in good form with Arsenal looking for a seventh straight victory across all competitions since falling, 2-0, to Southampton in league play on New Year's Day, while Spurs was in search of a second straight win in league play following a 3-0 drubbing of West Bromwich Albion last time out.
The visitors had the better of the play early on and took the leas after just 11 minutes when former Manchester United man Danny Welbeck raced past his mark down the right wing and cut it back to Olivier Giroud in the penalty area. Giroud directed it on goal and it was smashed home by Mesut Ozil.
But Spurs came roaring back in the second half, grabbing the equalizer in the 56th minute when a corner kick from the right corner by Erik Lamela failed to be handled by Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina and Kane was perfectly positioned at the back post to fire it home.
Kane, the boyhood Spurs fan, was at it again late on with four minutes to play when he ran onto a brilliant ball from Nabil Bentaleb and directed a looping header past Ospina to put the Lillywhites in front for the first time.
Arsenal sent numbers forward as the fourth official's board showed four minutes of added time, but the Gunners failed to produce an equalizer as Tottenham claimed an important three points against their bitter rivals.
The result sends Spurs to the cusp of the top four with 43 points, while Arsenal drops to sixth place with the defeat.
Also in the Premier League on Saturday, Liverpool and Everton squared off in the latest edition of the Merseyside derby, but nothing could separate the teams, aside from Stanley Park, as the clubs played to a scoreless draw at Goodison Park.
Liverpool's best chance came late in the first half as youngster Jordan Ibe blistered one off the left post, while Everton's best opportunity came late in the game as Ross Barkley sent Seamus Coleman in on goal with a great pass on the right side of the box.
Coleman let one go that looked earmarked for the top far corner, but Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet came up with an outstanding save.
League leaders Chelsea extended their margin atop the Premier League table to seven points on Saturday thanks to a 2-1 win over Aston Villa at Villa Park.
