Shawn Marion says he will retire after season

(SportsNetwork.com) - NBA veteran Shawn Marion says he plans to retire after this season, his 16th in the league.

Marion, currently playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers, told AZCentral.com he could play another three seasons but wants to spend more time with his first child, an 8-month-old son named Shawn.

The four-time All-Star played his first 8 1/2 seasons for the Phoenix Suns followed by stints with Miami, Toronto and Dallas. He signed with Cleveland in September for a chance to win a second NBA title.

Marion, 36, helped the Mavericks win a championship in 2011.

"I wanted to go out on my terms," Marion told the website. "The biggest thing is having a son. I got attached to him. Seeing him periodically is hard. Watching him grow up on pictures and videos is hard."

The 6-foot-7 forward, famous for his inelegant shooting style, was averaging 15.4 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 1,144 career games entering Wednesday.
