London, England (SportsNetwork.com) - West Ham United and Cameroon national team midfielder Alex Song announced Wednesday he has retired from international competition.

Song, 27, was left off Cameroon's roster for the upcoming African Cup of Nations, and subsequently made the decision to focus purely on domestic football with the Hammers.

"Since the World Cup in the summer and my subsequent exclusion from the Cameroon squad for the African Cup of Nations I have taken the decision to retire from international football," Song said.

"My love for my country will never change," Song said via his personal Instagram account. "I want to take time to focus purely on domestic football and start to rebuild my career at West Ham United."

Song has not played for his country since being sent off against Croatia in the group stages of the 2014 World Cup. He has earned 47 caps for his country.
