Aaron White scored 17 of his 19 points in the first half to lead Iowa to a 90-56 win over Hampton in the season opener for both teams on Friday night.
The Hawkeyes had 20 assists on their 29 field goals and a 48-32 rebounding margin.
Iowa's Jarrod Uthoff scored 13 points on a career-best four 3-pointers on five attempts. New starter Anthony Clemmons added 12 points.
Dwight Meikle scored 14 points to lead Hampton and Quinton Chievous added 12 points with nine rebounds.
White will be Iowa's go-to-guy with the departure of Roy Devyn Marble, last year's leading scorer.
White's 19 points came on just 6 of 8 shooting. The forward's putback dunk late in the first half received a big ovation from the Carver-Hawkeye Arena crowd.
White made 7 of 10 free throws and added seven rebounds and six assists in 21 minutes.
Iowa coach Fran McCaffery appreciates that White does a lot of the small things. White tipped in a couple of misses. The senior dove for a loose ball and called a timeout on the floor to steal a possession in the first half.
Clemmons looked sharp in his first start in 50 games for the Hawkeyes.
The junior replaced Marble in the starting lineup. Clemmons started 13 games in the middle of the 2012-13 season, but came off the bench every game last season.
Clemmons, the team's best on-ball defender, made an effort to improve his shooting and offense this summer. The guard made both of his 3-point attempts against the Pirates, including a corner 3 just before the end of the first half.
Hampton shot 34 percent from the floor, including only 4 of 18 on 3-pointers.
Iowa's Gabe Olaseni had 12 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. Peter Jok added 11 points.
The Hawkeyes have won 25 straight nonconference home games.
Friday was the first ever meeting between the schools. Iowa is 14-0 all-time against the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
