Ronaldo bags hat trick as Real crushes Deportivo

Madrid, Spain (SportsNetwork.com) - Cristiano Ronaldo bagged a hat trick on Saturday as Real Madrid rolled to a 8-2 thrashing of Deportivo La Coruna at the Riazor.

Gareth Bale and Javier Hernandez both scored a pair of goals, while new signing James Rodriguez added a goal for Los Blancos, who carried over their positive momentum from a 5-1 thrashing of Basel in the Champions League in midweek.

It took just 28 minutes for the visiting side to open the scoring and Rodriguez doubled the advantage after 36 minutes before Ronaldo hit for his second and a 3-0 lead four minutes before halftime.

Haris Medunjanin pulled one back for Deportivo with a penalty kick in the 51st minute, which appeared to give the hosts some hope, but Bale extinguished that hope with goals in the 66th and 74th minutes to make it 5-1.

Ronaldo completed his treble with 12 minutes to play before Jose Verdu Toche added a second goal for Deportivo with six minutes to play.

But again Real Madrid poured it on as Hernandez, the former Manchester United man, bagged both of his tallies in the final two minutes to put an exclamation point on the rout.

The result lifts the defending European champions to six points from four games, while Deportivo remains in 13th place with four points.

Also in La Liga on Saturday, Jhon Cordoba scored five minutes before the intermission to lift Granada to a 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao at the San Mames.

Defending La Liga champions Atletico Madrid were held to a 2-2 draw at the Vicente Calderon against Celta Vigo. Pablo Hernandez opened the scoring for Celta Vigo after 19 minutes, but Miranda found an equalizer just past the half-hour mark.

Atletico took the lead through a goal from Diego Godin just prior to the break, but they couldn't hold the lead as Nolito fired home a penalty strike in the 53rd minute to rescue a point for his side.

In Saturday's final La Liga fixture, Duda struck for the equalizer in the 90th minute to rescue a point for Malaga in a 2-2 draw with Espanyol at the Estadi Cornella-El Prat.
