When he wasn't thinking about his caddie's deceased wife, Matt Kuchar was busy making plenty of birdies in the Deutsche Bank Championship.

Kuchar ran off six straight birdies around the turn at the TPC Boston for a 5-under 66 that left him one shot out of the lead among the early starters in the second FedEx Cup playoff event.

Ryan Palmer got off to a roller-coaster start. He didn't make a par until his sixth hole. But he had a clean card on the back nine and a birdie on the last hole for a 71 that kept him in the lead.

Palmer was at 8-under 134.

Kuchar and Billy Horschel (66) were one behind.

Bill Haas kept alive his hopes for a Ryder Cup pick. He was two shots back.
