New Haven, CT (SportsNetwork.com) - Italian Camila Giorgi upset four-time champion Caroline Wozniacki in second-round action at the Connecticut Open tennis event, a final U.S. Open tune-up.
The 38th-ranked Giorgi sent the fourth-seeded former world No. 1 Wozniacki packing in 6-4, 6-2 fashion in 78 minutes on the hardcourts at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale. Giorgi also beat Wozniacki at last year's U.S. Open.
The former U.S. Open runner-up Wozniacki was the New Haven champ from 2008-11.
Giorgi's quarterfinal opponent will be promising Spaniard Garbine Muguruza, who got past Chinese qualifier Peng Shuai 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 on Wednesday.
Also suffering an upset on Wednesday was third-seeded Canadian Eugenie Bouchard, as she was upended by Australian wild card Samantha Stosur 6-2, 6-2 in the final match of the night.
Stosur will face Belgian Kirsten Flipkens in the quarterfinals, as Flipkens outlasted German Andrea Petkovic 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (8-6).
