Nebraska's Ryker Fyfe has used his underdog attitude to fuel his drive to the top backup quarterback's job behind Tommy Armstrong Jr.

Fyfe's only scholarship offer coming out of Grand Island High in 2012 was from Division II Nebraska-Kearney. He said he was confident he could play big-time college football and accepted Nebraska's invitation to walk on. Starting his third year with the Cornhuskers, he's beaten out heralded 2013 recruit Johnny Stanton to be No. 2 on the depth chart.

Offensive coordinator Tim Beck said Nebraska didn't have a scholarship available for Fyfe after Armstrong verbally committed to the 2012 recruiting class. Beck said he's surprised no Division I school offered Fyfe.

No. 22 Nebraska opens Aug. 30 against Florida Atlantic.
