Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a sprained ligament in his right knee.

The move is retroactive to Tuesday, a day after Machado was hurt in the third inning of Monday night's game against the Yankees on a broken-bat swing.

Machado collapsed at the plate and clutched his right knee after hitting a grounder to shortstop and needed help getting off the field, but Orioles manager Buck Showalter said after the game that things were "a lot more positive than the way it looked."

His injury was diagnosed following an MRI on Tuesday.

Machado was an All-Star last year but missed the last week of the season after tearing a ligament in his left knee. He made his season debut this year on May 1.

In additional roster transactions Wednesday, the O's selected the contract of infielder Cord Phelps from Triple-A Norfolk and transferred catcher Matt Wieters to the 60-day disabled list.
