Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Speaking publicly for the first time since undergoing experimental treatment for cancer, Houston Texans owner Bob McNair told the media Thursday that doctors have given him a clean bill of health.
McNair revealed to reporters that he had been battling chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) for the past 10 months at Houston's M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, where the 77-year-old was given a series of powerful radiation doses known as proton therapy.
The intense treatment sessions caused one side of McNair's face to be subjected to second-degree burns that required a plastic surgeon to repair.
McNair has had previous episodes with skin cancer and said he was diagnosed with CLL, a cancer of the blood and bone marrow, six years ago.
"My skin has been abused by the sun for an extended period of time," McNair shared. "As a result of that, over the last 20 years probably, I've had a regular procedure of going to the dermatologist.
"Last fall, I had an occurrence, it was just like a small pimple behind my left ear on the side of my head. I went in and my dermatologist looked at it and recognized that instead of being a non-cancerous growth was perhaps a squamous cell skin cancer. I went in and had surgery on that."
McNair said he had a CT scan performed in April and was declared cancer-free again by his doctors on Monday.
"At this point in time, its history," he stated.
