Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - American qualifier Shelby Rogers scored a stunning second-round upset of hometown favorite Eugenie Bouchard to highlight Tuesday's play at the $2.44 million Rogers Cup tennis event.
Rogers, ranked 113rd in the world, took advantage of six double faults by a mistake-prone Bouchard to hand the fifth-seeded Montreal native a 6-0, 2-6, 6-0 defeat on the hardcourts at Uniprix Stadium.
Bouchard was competing in her first tournament since reaching her first career Grand Slam final at Wimbledon last month, where she was beaten by Petra Kvitova in straight sets.
Third seed Agnieszka Radwanska had an easier time in her second-round match with Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, with the Polish star getting past the rising Czech 6-4, 6-4. Eighth-seeded Victoria Azarenka also advanced to the third round via a hard-fought 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 decision over France's Alize Cornet.
In opening-round action that involved former world No. 1s on Day 2, ninth- seeded Serb Ana Ivanovic drubbed Swiss qualifier Timea Bacsinszky 6-1, 6-2, 11th-seeded Caroline Wozniacki smacked Slovak Daniela Hantuchova 6-1, 6-1 and unseeded Venus Williams held off Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. Ivanovic titled here in 2006, while Wozniacki was the 2010 champ.
Another seeded opening-round winner was No. 14 Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro, who took care of Serb Bojana Jovanovski 6-4, 6-3.
Former U.S. Open champion and 2011 Rogers Cup runner-up Samantha Stosur of Australia handled Puerto Rican qualifier Monica Puig 6-2, 6-2, while American qualifier Coco Vandeweghe doused Chinese Zhang Shuai 6-2, 6-4 to reach the second round.
Two-time Grand Slam winner Svetlana Kuznetsova was forced to retire from her opening-round bout with Madison Keys, however, while trailing the American by a 6-1, 3-2 score.
Additional opening-round wins came for Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina, France's Caroline Garcia, Czech lucky loser Karolina Pliskova, Aussie Casey Dellacqua and Spaniard Garbine Muguruza, who downed Quebec resident Stephanie Dubois 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2.
This week's top seeds are U.S. Open and reigning Rogers Cup champion Serena Williams, Wimbledon winner Kvitova, Radwanska and French Open champ Maria Sharapova. Serena Williams, last week's Stanford titlist, will open her Montreal stay against Stosur, who stunned the American in the 2011 U.S. Open final. Kvitova will face Dellacqua in the round of 32.
The 2014 Rogers Cup champ will collect $467,300.
