Dodig ousts Isner in Toronto

Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - American John Isner suffered his second straight opening-round loss as he was bounced by Croatian Ivan Dodig Monday at the Rogers Cup, a Masters 1000 tournament.

Isner, seeded 10th, was beaten, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 at Rexall Centre. He was taken out in the first round last week in Washington, D.C.

For Dodig, Monday marked his first Tour-level match since he retired in the first round at the French Open to Marcel Granollers due to a right shoulder injury. Dodig has also struggled with a back problem this season, but on Monday he sent Isner packing in just under two hours.

There were a couple of long rain delays on the hardcourts at this U.S. Open Series event, but seeded players Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Marin Cilic advanced. Tsonga, seeded 13th, toppled Edouard Roger-Vasselin, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1; and Cilic, the No. 15 seed, moved on by holding off Denis Istomin 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.

Feliciano Lopez defeated No. 14 seed Roberto Bautista Agut, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3.

Also on Day 1, France's Jeremy Chardy snuck past Argentine Federico Delbonis 6-3, 5-7, 6-4; French qualifier Benoit Paire overcame Colombian Alejandro Falla 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-2; American qualifier Michael Russell topped France's Nicolas Mahut, 6-3, 6-3; and Frenchman Julien Benneteau defeated Australian Lleyton Hewitt, 6-1, 6-2.

Other winners on Monday were Peter Polansky, Kevin Anderson, Tim Smyczek and Jeremy Chardy.

Malek Jaziri was leading Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, 6-4, 5-5, with that match set to conclude Tuesday. It was suspended by darkness Monday.

Rafael Nadal beat Canada's own Milos Raonic in last year's final in Montreal, as this tournament shifts between Toronto and Montreal each year. An injured Nadal is not defending his title this week.

The top seeds are three-time champion Novak Djokovic and two-time titlist Roger Federer. Tuesday's evening session will see Federer take on Polansky, a wild card from Canada who is ranked 129th in the world.

The winner of this $3.145 million event will earn $600,000.
