St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - The Tampa Bay Rays placed starting catcher Ryan Hanigan on the 15-day disabled list Thursday due to a strained left oblique.

The move is retroactive to July 9. Hanigan had missed the Rays' final four games prior to the All-Star break with the injury.

Acquired in an offseason trade with Cincinnati, Hanigan has hit .212 with four home runs and 27 RBI in 61 games for Tampa Bay this season.

Curt Casali had his contract selected from Triple-A Durham to serve as the Rays' second catcher while Hanigan is sidelined, with 2013 American League Rookie of the Year Wil Myers transferred to the 60-day DL to open up a spot on the 40-man roster.

Myers is expected to be out until August with a stress fracture in his right wrist that the outfielder suffered in early June.

Casali has hit .261 with four homers and 28 RBI between Durham and Double-A Montgomery this season.
