Bastad, Sweden (SportsNetwork.com) - Sixth seed Jeremy Chardy came up a first-round loser, while reigning champion Carlos Berlocq moved on Tuesday at the Swedish Open tennis event.

Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas drubbed the French Chardy 6-2, 6-2 on the red clay at Bastad Tennis Stadium.

Two other seeds avoided upsets, as a No. 7 Berlocq, of Argentina, overcame German Julian Reister 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 and No. 8 rising star Pablo Carreno Busta, of Spain, handled German Dustin Brown 6-3, 6-4.

Berlocq captured his first-ever ATP title here a year ago by besting Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in the final.

Additional opening-round wins came for Spanish qualifier Albert Ramos-Vinolas, Swedish wild cards Christian Lindell and Elias Ymer, Argentine qualifier Renzo Olivo, Romanian Victor Hanescu, and Moldovian qualifier Radu Albot.

This week's top seeds are Spaniards David Ferrer, Tommy Robredo and Verdasco, all of who received opening-round byes. Ferrer and Robredo are two-time Bastad champions. Robredo will open up on Wednesday against Olivo, while Ferrer will face Hanescu and Verdasco will take on his fellow Spaniard Ramos-Vinolas on Thursday.

The 2014 Bastad titlist will collect $105,000.
