Australia coach Ange Postecoglou says it would be pointless trying to contain the Netherlands and hit back on the counter in their World Cup Group B match on Wednesday.

He says, "If we just try and defend for 90 minutes there will be only one result — and it won't be in our favor."

Postecoglou spoke Tuesday ahead of Australia's last training session before it meets the Netherlands, which stunned reigning champion Spain 5-1 in its opening match.

Australia is coming off a 3-1 loss to Chile, but Postecolglou says it's unlikely the Socceroos will be overawed by the Dutch.

He says, "We keep saying we want to measure ourselves against the best, and we are getting an opportunity to do that."
