Dusseldorf, Germany (SportsNetwork.com) - Reigning champion Juan Monaco upset second-seeded Marcel Granollers to reach the quarterfinals at the Dusseldorf Open.

The Argentine Monaco mauled the Spaniard Granollers 6-1, 6-2 at Rochusclub.

Monaco beat Finland's Jarkko Nieminen in last year's inaugural finale at this final French Open tune-up.

Also in the second round on Day 4, Austrian Jurgen Melzer took out fourth- seeded Portuguese Joao Sousa 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 6-4, seventh-seeded 6-foot-10 Croat Ivo Karlovic beat Serb Nikola Milojevic 6-4, 7-5 and Czech Jiri Vesely downed former top-five star Nikolay Davydenko, of Russia, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).

The first round concluded when Aussie Jason Kubler got past Italian Alessandro Giannessi 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 in a match that was suspended because of darkness on Tuesday.
