Mexico City, Mexico (SportsNetwork.com) - Mexico will be without midfielder Juan Carlos Medina for the 2014 World Cup after it was revealed that he will undergo surgery to repair an ankle injury.
The 31-year-old figured to play a key role for manager Miguel Herrera after featuring for Herrera's title-winning America team in Liga MX in 2013, while Medina has been called into every one of Herrera's national team sides.
Medina came off the bench for Mexico in a 2-2 friendly draw with the United States in April and helped to spark El Tri's comeback, but his absence will leave Herrera short on options in midfield.
Taking the place of Medina on the roster will be Toluca's 25-year-old Miguel Ponce, who was a member of Mexico's 2012 Olympic team that captured the gold medal.
